Title: A Quick Bus Tour Through "Wikiville":

Description of the Topic:

"Dr. Rite" introduces the description of the topic. Avatars is one of many examples of how wikis can be enhanced to capture both the imagination and interest of the user. Other possibilities will be discussed later in this presentation.

History:

First introduced by Ward Cunningham, Wikis have been used as web based software since around 1995. As Ward wrote the new program for this new type of application, he chose to use a number of doublings in his formatting style. Coincidentally, he had recently visited Hawaii and learned a Hawaiian word for "quick". That word is Wiki Wiki. Thus, once this new application software was being published, he opted for the name "Wiki wiki". (Used in context by Hawaiian tour guide, recommending the "quick bus", or Wiki wiki bus.) Interestingly, the Hawaiian pronunciation of the word rhymes with "leaky", not with "sticky" as we currently use today. Thus, overtime, the term was shortened to wiki...rhyming with sticky.

Importance of the Topic:

Wikis are being used more frequently, and for more reasons. Companies such as Disney, IBM and Motorola now use wikis instead of the traditional website for their intranet needs. (Hickerson, C. & Thompson, S, 2007). Healthcare communities now use wikis to allow patient to patient interaction and interpretation instead of the traditional information only websites. (Wagner, C. & Majchrzak, A., 2007). In education, and more specifically in nursing education, wikis can be powerful tools for course enhancement and research. Wikis actively engage learners, enhancing the learning of today's technologically connected students. Additionally, as a research tool, wikis can store information, documents, communications and discussions-all in one web space. (Kardong-Edgren, S, Oermann, M, Tennant, M & C. Snelson, E. Hallmark, N. Rogers & D. Hurd, 2009). Specific applications to these industries will be discussed under this Wiki's tabs: Business Applications, educational applications and training/instruction. Wikis are replacing traditional websites and traditional intranets. The ability to use a wiki, to understand what a wiki is, to ascertain who may be able to add or edit entries, and how to evaluate if the information obtained from wikis is reliable will be more important as both a consumer and a potential contributor to wikis.
